Mudguards

** Mudguard season starts 8th November 2025 **

To participate in a club ride during mudguard seaon you MUST have at least a full-length rear mudguard. A front guard is optional but your feet will thank you!

This is not optional – if you do not have a compliant mudguard you will be turned away from the club ride, even if the weather is dry – you have been warned!

You cannot turn up with no mudguard and say you will stay on the back of a group – this is selfish.

The mudguard rule is in place for the benefit of the other riders in your group, a mudguard fitted to your bike significantly reduces your fellow riders being covered in the water, mud, grit, gravel, salt, manure etc thrown up by your rear wheel.

Our club rides are social rides, so it is polite and sociable to fit a mudguard of the correct length.

A bonus is it keeps you drier and cleaner, but primarily it benefits those who have chosen to ride with.

Even in dry conditions, winter club riding takes place on gritty, gravelling, muddy and salty roads and these conditions still require mudguards.

The mudguard must be a proper “wraparound” guard which follows the wheel and tyre (see the photo below). Ass savers or similar are not acceptable.

Please make sure that your mudguard finishes below the line of your bike’s chainstay – see photo below for the absolute minimum length to comply with this rule.

However, the longer the better, as longer mudguards dramatically cut down on the muck thrown up off the road onto those behind you.

TY Cycles can help advise on the best guards for your bike and sell and fit various types.

If you need to extend your mudguard with a flap then the club will shortly be restocking with the snazzy NCCC mudguard extensions. Watch this space!
